Presented by Scott Forschler, PhD

Description

Dr. Forschler will argue that all sound moral beliefs have a completely secular basis: the principle of consistency or non-contradiction in evaluative judgment. Or to put it more simply: the golden rule. Conscience--our capacity to recognize the validity of this principle--is a by-product of evolutionarily-successful traits our ancestors acquired, although morality itself does not directly or necessarily contribute to evolutionary success. Religious morality, on the other hand, is at best borrowed without attribution from this secular source, and at worst is a source of harmful and immoral self-deception which tempts us away from true morality.

About the Speaker

Dr. Forschler received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, in 2004. He specializes in ethical theory, and is the author of a forthcoming book on The Logic of Morality.
