In the 1960s, a few Protestant theologians began preaching that "God is dead," and some took the name "Christian atheists." In 1966, their ideas were on the cover of Time magazine, which asked, "Is God Dead?" The "death of God" theology sparked a debate in the mainstream media over the relevance of religion in modern American life, not just between atheists and Christians, but among the religious community itself, which arguably continues today - Newsweek published an article reminiscent of the "death of God" controversy a few weeks ago entitled "The End of Christian America."
About the Speaker
Kevin is a second-year student at MSU and a board member of CFI MSU. He wrote a research paper last year on the subject of the “death of God” in the United States, entitled, “A Popular Contradiction: the Role of the Print Media in the “God is Dead” Controversy.” His majors are Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy and International Relations, with a specialization in Political Economy.
