Service: Healthy Homes Canvassing (Grand Rapids)

Thursday, August 10, 2017, 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Grand Rapids neighborhood TBD, 49507 area, Grand Rapids, MI, View Map

We are all aware of the lead contamination problem in Flint, but did you realize that we have a similar problem in Grand Rapids? In fact, Grand Rapids has the highest rate of childhood lead poisoning in the state. In 2015 there were more children poisoned in the 49507 area code than in the entire city of Flint! Thankfully, the Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan is ready to take action, and members of CFI-Michigan will be ready to join them. On July 26 Paul Haan, the Executive Director of the Coalition, will be the guest speaker at our regular lecture at the Women’s City Club. Paul will present more details into this serious problem and what they will be doing in an ongoing effort to mitigate it. This will be a program that our members will not want to miss.

Then, on the evening of August 10, volunteers from CFI-Michigan will join the Coalition in canvassing homes in the 49507 area. We will know which neighborhood at a later date. The evening will begin at 5:30 pm for an orientation on the details of the canvassing, followed by the actual door-to-door work from 6-8 pm. We’re anticipating a good turnout of our members for this service project. Those interested in volunteering for this should contact Dennis.
