Service: Going Native: Landscaping For Biodiversity (Marne)

Description

CFI Service Committee is hosting a lecture and garden tour event to highlight the importance of using native plants to promote biodiversity. Shane VanOosterhout will give a presentation about native plants, including a short video about the Monarch butterfly. Following the presentation attendees will be treated to an educational tour of the Merkabee House gardens. This event is designed to inform and encourage attendees to 'sow the seeds' of biodiversity in their own communities. Follow up service opportunities will be discussed.

About the Speaker

Shane VanOosterhout is a professional gardener and garden photographer, designer, educator and writer. He is the Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator for the Ottawa County Michigan State University Extension Office. His primary interests include ecology and environmental stewardship. Shane is also Adjunct Professor of Digital Media at Kendall College of Art & Design. Shane received his Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. He lives and gardens at Merkabee House (http://web.mac.com/merkebee/iWeb/Site/Merkebee.html), a 10 acre property which is a National Wildlife Foundation Certified Backyard Habitat, and maintains a blog called The Passionate Gardener (www.livetogarden.blogspot.com).

Additional Details

The Service Committee is a program of CFI Michigan that is working to support CFI’s mission by translating humanist values into action for the common good of humanity. The Committee is working to provide opportunities for members to engage in community service and outreach throughout the year.
