Critical Thinking Panel Discussion (Grand Rapids)

Wednesday, May 10, 2017, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Women's City Club, 254 E. Fulton St., Grand Rapids, MI, View Map

Description

Ed Brayton, Jeremy Beahan and Justin Schieber will discuss the importance of critical thinking and the many ways that we undermine our own rationality. Topics will include cognitive dissonance, motivated reasoning, tribalism and the huge body of research on how human beings rationalize away contrary evidence and use shortcuts in our thinking that can lead us astray.

About the Panelists

Ed Brayton frequently speaks on topics of science and religion, particularly creation versus evolution; civil liberties and the war on terror; and separation of church and state. His most recent talk is called Why Atheism is Not Enough. It’s a powerful plea to put humanist principles into action every day.

Jeremy Beahan teaches classes in Philosophy and Aesthetics at Kendall College of Art and Design/Ferris State University. Jeremy was also a co-host and producer for the Reasonable Doubts podcast and radio show. He has been an active member of the Freethought Association (now CFI Michigan) since 2002.

Justin Schieber is the host of Real Atheology (RealAtheology.com), a Podcast focusing on contemporary academic philosophy of religion. Justin has lectured on the philosophical arguments for and against the existence of God and has participated in many public debates throughout the United States and Canada.
