Presented by Marissa Postler, 2nd Ward City Commissioner, Wyoming City Council

Description

As if the 2016 election season wasn’t interesting enough already, the citizens of Wyoming, Michigan elected a twenty-three-year old atheist to their city council. Marissa had no prior experience in politics, but managed to win the November 8th election against the incumbent.

Marissa will be sharing her experiences so far on the council, what inspired her to run for office in the first place, and the importance of getting more young people involved in politics - particularly those who are nonreligious.

About the Speaker

Marissa Postler was just elected to Wyoming, Michigan’s City Council, representing the second ward of the city. She is the only atheist on the council, the only woman, and the youngest council member ever to serve in the city of Wyoming. She is also currently wrapping up her undergraduate studies at Grand Valley State University, where she plans to graduate next May with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. She hopes to pursue a career teaching music in public schools while also continuing to serve as a city council member.
